Voice Over Mics: What’s Your Choice?

A good voice over can only be as good as the voice over talent that produced it, right? Does your microphone choice make one voice over better than another? We all have our opinions on which mics are the best and here’s a couple of mine!

Rode NT1A Stereo Matched Pair Vocal Condenser Microphones
The RODE NT1-A 1″ cardioid condenser microphone has become an industry standard; delivering the warmth, extended dynamic range, clarity and high SPL capability typically only featured on some of the most expensive microphones.

AKG C 414
A Voice actors reference-quality microphone with three switchable bass cut filters and three pre-attenuation pads with LEDs for quick visual indication. Smooth and sweet.

I also found a moment to ask my good friend Steve Gregan of Waterfront Sound for his opinion on his favorite voice over. Here are a couple of his “go tos”

Sennheiser 416
“The Sennheiser 416 shotgun mic, which is a staple of VO studios around LA. It’s good for rooms with suspect acoustics due to its supercardioid pattern. This is the mic I grab first for a voice I’m not familiar with. However, it is sensitive to direction, though, you’ve got to be careful getting off axis with the 416. You can find a good one for around 1k.”

Kiwi by Blue
“The third is the Kiwi by BLUE, which is a large….really large!….diaphragm mic. I bought it more than a decade ago, based on the praise it got when released. It’s got a bit more of a “modern” presence to the high end, but really warm and natural sounding in the low to mid range. It’s size can limit it’s flexibility….but I’ve recently been using it on a huge national car campaign, with great results.”

‘One size fits all’ doesn’t necessarily work for mics in the voice over world but that doesn’t stop us from having our opinions. What’s your favorite mic?

A Conversation with Jeff Meltzer of Meltzer Media Productions

Last year, I had the privilege of working on a couple of voice over projects with legendary DRTV producer, Jeff Meltzer; the latest being for JCORE Total Body Transformation System. With each project Jeff works on, he proves time and time again that he is one of the best producers in the infomercial business.  They certainly don’t call him “Mr. Infomercial” for nothing!

It always interests me to find out why someone chooses their professional path and how they feel about the business, so I asked Jeff a few questions about the industry:

Me: How did you get into infomercials?

Jeff: In 1985, I was approached by a friend of mine who said he was quitting his job at a major ad agency.  He heard that cable TV Time had become available to anyone looking to buy time and that he was going to start making 30 minute shows that sold products directly to the consumer via #800.  We created the first ever skin care infomercial called, “Love Your Skin” (that sold the first 5 product skin regime). It ultimately grossed 100 million dollars and the rest is now history.

Me: What trends do you see in the business?

Jeff: You can no longer solely depend on selling products direct to consumer via TV or the web.  Retail, home shopping, print, insert mail and International sales all need to be a part of the selling process. Today we basically use infomercials to get our products on the retail shelves and drive stores sales. Online marketing is also becoming a refined art of marketing to sell directly to consumers. We use a variety of search engine optimization techniques to insure that our products are seen by as many potential buyers as possible.

Me: What do you look for when it comes to working with talent, voice over, models, and hosts?

Jeff: As you know there is no ‘one look’ for an infomercial on-camera or sound for a voice over talent. The Host or actors we use to pitch our products really depends on what products we’re selling and what buying audience we’re trying to reach.  We always look for fresh, honest looking knowledgeable hosts/hostesses that can seamlessly pitch a product with enthusiasm and conviction. As far voice over talent goes, we look for strong, honest and friendly voices that can ‘act with their voices’. By that I mean, the VO needs to be able to enunciate the copy  to enhance the excitement and value of the product they’re selling. Their voices, many times, are the ones that educate the consumer and convince them that the problem solving nature of the product will improve their lives as well as represents a great value.

Continued success in 2013, Jeff!   To learn more about Meltzer Media, please check them out at www.meltzermedia.com.

The Mark Isler Show on AM 870 The Answer

Growing up, I was a huge fan of radio. After spending the first 13 years of my professional career in the business, that love for radio still stands. There are so many unique shows out there today, but I have always been a fan of Mark Isler’s Saturday night show on AM 870 The Answer in Los Angeles.

I was thrilled when I found out that I had the opportunity to be a guest during Mark’s “House Party” in the 10 pm hour on Sunday, December 2, My co-panelists and I had a blast talking about movies, TV, and of course, the holiday season!

Mark is an accomplished educator, successful businessman, and radio personality. In 2011, Mark decided to bring his talent to AM 870 the Answer. With Mark’s ability to combine knowledge and humor, his Saturday night show has seen much success in the Southern California market and podcast communities.

The Mark Isler Show is live every Saturday night on AM 870 The Answer from 9 pm to 11 pm (PST). For more information, click here or call 1-866-870-5752 during Mark’s show for a chance to be a part of the discussion. You can also visit him on Facebook or Twitter.

The History of Voice Over: Then and Now

While I was getting ready to go record for a new project recently, I found myself wondering when the voice over industry had its inception. So, I went to this one website called Google (not sure if you have heard of it) to do a bit of research and what I came across was way more than I could have expected. I mean, just check out this awesome info graphic that I came across:

Although, I went searching for information on the more modern voice over industry (as we know it today) it was still very cool to see the use of voice in all forms of entertainment media. This info graphic showed me how voice has played such a vital roll in the development of the entertainment that we enjoy today.

Sony MDR-V6 Headphones: The Sound of Real Quality

Working with my MDR-V6 Headphones

For an artist, especially a musician or someone that does voice-overs like I do, good equipment can make or break the final product.

When it comes to monitoring my work, I always feel the most comfortable with my Sony MDR-V6 headphones. I’ve had them since I was 20 and they haven’t caused me any problems yet.

For me, the sound quality of the headphones has always been superior to anything else on the market. I remember I first started using them back when I was doing traffic reports in Chicago for WBBM News Radio and they have been with me ever since.

Maybe I’m just sentimental, but there is something great about a piece of equipment so reliable. My headphones have lasted me this long, I know they will continue to last me for many years longer.

Waterfront Sound…Now Coming to the Mic

Since Waterfront Sound first opened in 1999 they have worked with a wide variety of artists and professionals. They have also done sound production for many networks including Discovery Channel, Travel Channel, and History Channel. Personally, I’ve worked with Waterfront on many top infomercials and narration projects.

I was able to catch up with owner Steve Gregan, one of my favorite guys in the Industry, to ask him a few quick questions about his experience operating Waterfront. Here is what he had to say:

DL: So Steve, what is the best thing about owning a recording studio?

SG: The best part is definitely the ability to work on such a wide variety of things. For example, we recently put together the extras for the recent Paramount Star Trek movie but sometime you might find us working on voice over or music composition work also.

DL: That does sound fun. If you had to choose a favorite piece of equipment in your studio, what would it be?

SG: Hands down, the microphones. Software is exciting too but it is ever changing. When you have a quality microphone or musical instrument they can last you upwards of twenty years. The old school microphones are the best.

DL: I hear ya’! I feel the same about my headphones! Been using Sony MDR-V6 headphones for years and I love them. But I’ll save that for another blog!
